  • Why did the buffalo population increase
  • Did the population increase because of more space?
  • Did it have less predation?
  • The buffalo population in the Serengeti increased from ~30000 to ~80000 form 1960-1975
  • Was there a disease that got cured?
  • No it did not have more space. This is important because if there were more room, the carrying capacity would be higher, allowing more food to grow there, and more buffalo to fit, so more space is very important.
  • What about the wildebeest?
  • No there was not any less predation, which means there are the same amount of animals trying to kill the buffalos.
  • How do we know if a population will stay stable?
  • Yes! Rinderpest is an infectious cattle disease that got passed on to buffalo through shared grass.
  • The wildebeest are a goat like animal with a younger maturity age than buffalo which allows them to have babies sooner, a shorter term pregnancy which allows them to have babies more often, and they migrate which gives them access to more food. All these factors allow them to keep there numbers up when they got infected with Rinderpest.
  • Unless a disaster happens the population will stay stable. An abundance of food or space can promote the possibility of stability. Each animal will go to top carrying capacity(The population one space can support) then drop and stabilize.
