  • Kathy - Character and Relationships
  • Kathy H. can be described as introverted, perceptive, determined, and nurturing. She is also, guarded, frustrated, restrained, and avoidant. She has a complicated friendship with Ruth, based on familiarity. Quietly observant, when Kathy notices subtle inauthentic behaviours in Ruth, it frustrates her, and leads to contention. Largely, Kathy avoids direct confrontation and addresses her problems passively, by walking off or redirecting. Her relationship with Tommy begins with her reaching out to him when he is upset and misunderstood. This accepting, and nurturing quality, later makes her a good carer. Kathy becomes his confidante and friend, and later, his lover. As the narrative progresses, her strong romantic feelings for him become evermore apparent- although she never expresses it - even to the reader. This guarded nature of Kathy emphasises her unreliability as a narrator.
  • Tommy - Character and Relationships
  • Tommy D can be described as passionate, intuitive, and honest. On the other hand, he is also angry, and confused. As a child, Tommy has 'rages' which are often the result of the others teasing him. The other children also make fun of him for his lack of artistic ability, enjoying watching his meltdowns and tantrums. With the friendship of Kathy H. and Miss Lucy's advice, Tommy's learns to control his outbursts and learns restraint.Tommy D. is the love interest of the protagonist Kathy, and the foil character Ruth. This regularly puts him at the centre of their fights as they use him to score points off one another. He is often confused by their behaviour and is the only character that outwardly struggles with conformity.
  • Ruth - Character and Relationships
  • As the story in narrated in Kathy's voice, it is difficult for the reader to fully accept the characterisation of Ruth. However, from Kathy's perspective, we see Ruth develop the most. Ruth, contrasts to Kathy. Extroverted, she likes to lead with her big aspirations and ideas. She can also be cruel, manipulative, untruthful and disloyal. Later as an adult, however, we see Ruth as remorseful, loving and thoughtful. Ruth, Kathy and Tommy are bound by Hailsham. We see a familial-like bond, especially in the at times, toxic, relationship with Kathy. Like sisters, they quarrel and argue. Then, juxtaposed by the toxicity, is their ease, trust and reliance on one another. Ruth acts like the older sister who leads, punishes, gives, and deprives. For all her faults, Ruth is a fierce character who Kathy loves all thesame.
