- Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7th, 1941, which set off a chain of events for the U.S involvement in World War II. Also, it heightened the racial tensions with Japanese Americans in the US
- African Americans
- Anyone of Japanese descent was suspected of being a part of the Pearl Harbor bombing. Because of this, they were forced to leave their homes and move into internment camps.
- Jewish Americans
- At the beginning of the war, women started to dominate the jobs that men used to have. As the war continued women were actually able to help the war by joining it. Most women had desk jobs, but there were women who were able to fly planes and work as engineers.
- Mexican Americans
- When African Americans first joined the war the most they were allowed to do was clean, cook, and shine shoes. But with help from people back home, Roosevelt signed Executive Order 8802. This order lead many African Americans out of rural areas and into the industrial cities. Housing was hard to find and the racism never ended
- Jewish Americans were painfully aware of what was happening to their friends and family in Europe but felt they could do nothing to help them. In the end, many Jewish men 18-44 enlisted in the army. Some were shamed but others found more faith in humanity and were able to see people for who they really were.
- Many Mexican Americans went to fight in the war. Because of this, the U.S lost a lot of its farmers. They started the Bracero Program, which gave Mexican citizens a chance to sign a short contract for work in America. They built their own towns in run-down parts of cities and were mostly self-sufficient. But with high crime rates Americans were fearful of gangs and many riots broke out, hurting a lot of the new population.
