  • The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
  • Scene 1: The Move From the Berlin Home
  • Scene 2: Bruno Sees Something Outside His Window
  • by John Boyne
  • Scene 3: Bruno Falls Off the Swing
  • Bruno, age nine, comes home to find that his father got a new job in another country. Bruno doesn't want to move; he loves his house in Berlin because there are many nooks and crannies for him to hide away and play in. Nonetheless, Bruno, his mother, father, and older sister move. It is unknown where the family is moving, only that the new house is far from Berlin.
  • Scene 4: Bruno's Grandmother
  • Bruno finds Maria, the family maid, packing all of his belongings.
  • Bruno and his sister, Gretel, age twelve, look out Bruno's window to find miles of land filled with low huts, soldiers wearing similar uniforms as their father does, and thousands of very skinny people all dressed in dirty striped pyjamas, all of which was surrounded by a tall, sharp fence. The two children aren't sure why, so they put it out of mind. Bruno still isn't sure where their new house is located, but Gretel informs him that their property is called Out-With.
  • Scene 5: Bruno Finds a Boy on the Other Side of the Fence
  • While his mother isn't home, Bruno falls off his swing and is knocked unconscious. When he wakes up, he is scratched-up and the nine-year-old boy thinks he's going to bleed to death. His family's butler, Pavol, runs to his rescue and helps him into the house before cleaning and bandaging Bruno's wounds. Bruno's mom comes home and says that, if anyone asks, she bandaged Bruno up, not Pavol. Bruno doesn't understand why his mom would do this, but he goes with it.
  • Bruno's father's job has still not been clearly stated at this point in the story. In this scene, Bruno's grandmother (Bruno's father's mother) is told that Bruno's father was given a new job and, with that, came a new uniform. Bruno's Grandmother strongly disapproved and told her son that seeing him in that uniform makes me want to tear the eyes out of my head!
  • Bruno goes exploring in his backyard where he saw all of those people through his window. He doesn't see any children he can be friends with, so he continues walking until he sees the dot that became a speck that became a blob that became a figure that became a boy,. Bruno meets a boy named Shmuel.
