Chapter 7, Bud enters the library hoping to find Miss Hill; perhaps she can help him. As always, he notices the smell of the library. ... He closes his eyes and takes a breath: he smells the leather covers of old books, the cloth covers of new books (that creak when opened), and even the paper.

Chapter 8, Bud wakes up to a twig snapping and senses a person staring at him. He grabs his knife and is about to attack the person, but the person pounces on him and traps him under his blanket. The person says he's sorry if the guy under the blanket isn't Bud from the Home.
Chapter 11
Chapter 9, Bud is saddened to not see his pretend-family in the food line, where he had once shared a brown sugar moment with them. He eats and moves on to the library, where the new librarian recognizes Bud and gives a special Civil War book to him. ... The new librarian remembers he used to always ask Ms.Hill.
Chapter 12
Going to Grand Rapids.
Chapter 10, As Bud walks, he notices all the sounds of nature and thinks about what is happening out there. Along the side of the road, Bud walks and ducks into the bushes when cars pass. ... Then a car that is passing by stops, and a man gets out to look for Bud in the bushes.

Chapter 11, Bud tries to drive away, but the car chugs and dies. The driver asks Bud to lower the window so they can speak. ... The youngster considers this, and while he is not completely certain, he feels safe enough to unlock the car door.
Chapter 12. After breakfast, Bud and Lefty Lewis get in the car to head to Grand Rapids. Suddenly, Bud says someone stole the box of blood, but Lefty tells him that while he was deeply asleep, they dropped it off at the hospital. Bud thinks that is funny because usually he is a light sleeper.
