- The Korean War (1950-1953) began when the North Korean Communist army crossed the 38th Parallel and invaded non-Communist South Korea.

- Kim Sŏng-juwas the founder and first Supreme Leader of North Korea, which he ruled from the country's establishment in 1948 until his death in 1994.

- The domino theory was a theory prominent from the 1950s to the 1980s that posited that if one country in a region came under the influence of communism, then the surrounding countries would follow in a domino effect.
