Theme
The breadwinner takes place mostly in her apartment Kabul, Afghanistan's capital city (Ellis 1). Some other main locations are the Market and inside Parvana's home.
Social Issue
NO WOMEN OR GIRLS ALLOWED OUTSIDE
One of the conflicts is between Parvana and the Taliban. The Taliban keep Parvana from getting her and her family's daily needs. Since Parvana's father got arrested, and the Taliban rule is no girls allowed outside, Parvana and her family starve from no food or water (Ellis 42).
Symbols
One of the themes in The Breadwinner is that you should never give up Hope. Since Parvana has to pretend to be a boy she has to Hope that she wont get caught (Ellis 66). In the end she ends up not getting caught and able to provide for her family (Ellis 88).
One of the biggest social issues in The Breadwinner is Women or girls are not aloud to do certain things (Ellis 43). All the women in Kabul are not aloud to do things such as go outside, and girls cant go to school (Ellis 19).
The Scissors Parvana cuts her hair with are a symbol. These scissors symblolize the power Parvana has to become a provider for her family (Ellis 64).
