How do you think Trapper felt at different times in the story?
How did the story make you feel?
Do you think Trapper gave Muttsok good advice?
Why did Muttsok try to collect all the seals?
To get ready I collected my materials: pencils, paper, and a copy of the book Trapper by Stephen Cosgrove and Robin James.

What is a Habitat?
I will start the lesson by having the students give me rules and guidelines they think will make sense for learning outdoors.

We will discuss what natural objects the students would like to collect and generate a list on the board. I would go over the list with the students, discussing what might be all right to collect and what should be left in nature. I will then give examples and explain how they are part of a habitat and how they may be missed.
Butterflies!
Rocks!
Turtles!
Snakes!
Flowers!
Leaves!
We will look at the list of rules that the students generated initially, and I would ask if there any rules they would like to add or change.

For grades 2-4 the students should choose one rule and write it at the bottom of their paper. Then they should draw a picture illustrating it. The pictures should be line drawings in pencil. The teacher will then take all of the pictures and make copies of them to bind them into coloring books that can be distributed to a younger group of students.
Be careful not to litter.
For PreK-1st, lead an exercise in which the students act out the rules they listed on the board. After they have practiced each one several times, play a game in which you call out a rule and they act it out until you call out another one.
