  • Good morning, everyone! Today you are going to be split into two groups. Your task is to conduct a debate on the banning of single-use plastics. One side will be for, the other will be against. You have 20 minutes to prepare! I won't tell you if you are for or against until your planning time is up, but you will have access to your laptops during the debate!

  • Plastic pollution devastates marine ecosystems. According to our source, over 100,000 marine animals die annually due to plastic waste. This ban could cut that number significantly.

  • Wait, I found a follow-up study. It shows government subsidies could offset the cost for small businesses. I’ll link it here.

  • Looks like our point about subsidies resonated. Nice work!
  • Fantastic debate, everyone. Let’s reflect: What worked well in your argumentation, and what could be improved next time?

  • I agree. Having the shared platform helped us stay organized, but next time, we should practice time management more.
  • Yes, but we need to anticipate counterarguments better.
  • Our visual aids made our points clearer!
  • Excellent insights. I’ll leave the debate chat open so you can review and respond to each other’s reflections before next class.

  • Yeah, your data on marine life was hard to counter. Great job.
  • Good point, but it doesn’t account for cultural differences. For example, the U.S. generates more plastic waste per capita, which makes implementation here harder.
  • But subsidies aren’t guaranteed, and there’s a lag time before they take effect. Let’s ask: what happens in the meantime?
  • But banning plastics might harm small businesses. A 2022 survey found that 68% of small retailers reported financial stress from switching to sustainable alternatives.
  • Okay, I’ll start bookmarking some studies in our shared folder! I’ll pull up the graph on waste reduction, and statistics on the economic impact on small businesses!
