Dancing was her escape, and at sixteen, she joined a street dance troupe. She left her husband, Willis Wells, a musician, to try her luck in New York, but kept her name. She joined two Broadway troupes. Spotted by a producer, she was persuaded to go to Paris with Sidney Bechet.

She arrived in Paris at the age of 19. She quickly became the star of the "Revue Nègre" at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées. In 1927, at the Folies Bergères, she caused a scandal wearing a simple banana belt. At the age of 20, the first black star in France opened her own cabaret in Montmartre, "Chez Joséphine". Her garçonne hairstyle was widely adopted. Her first song, "J'ai deux amours", established her as a diva.
