  • "Chase? Your lucky your father didn't answer! Can you please just go to the police with me?"
  • "I know mom but please can you meet me? I'm so hungry I need money."
  • "Mom is that you?" *Whispers*
  • "Ma'am could you please enter the drugstore?"
  • There he is. I can't believe this.

  • "No. UGHH now we have to butt out our cigarettes."
  • "How much is the guitar? I don't have the money right now. Could you hold it for me? I should have the money in a month."

  • "It's $1500. I cannot hold anything, this isn't Walmart. You have the money, you pay, you leave. Make sense?"

  • Chase and Mom have been talking on the phone together and meeting up at the mall. This is a secret that Gordie's mom hasn't told to anyone, not even her husband. However, one day Gordie listens into the conversation and finds out. This scene is vital to the story because it shows how Chase and his problems have effected this family and forces them to make difficult decisions.
  • "Your mother blames me. Let's just say the police won't be so nice to Chase the next time around."
  • That was probably the first thing he tried to eat all day.
  • "No she doesn't. You and I both know that."
  • Now that they know where Chase is, the police surround the area in attempts to catch him. They however, fail to do this and Chase runs away. This scene is very important to the story because it's what leads to everything that happens next. The next time, they won't be so nice to Chase when they find him.
  • "I'm locking the door so they can't kill you. You have two choices. Stay here and I'll call the police."

  • "Wha-What are you doing? Ratchett is right there! Gordie, I need the money."

  • When Chase broke in their house, he stole Gordie's guitar. Gordie spots his guitar through a window of a shop. However, the price is very high and he can't afford to buy it back. This part is important because even when Chase is gone, he is still messing and effecting Gordie's life.

  • "I wouldn't normally ask this but I'm a little hard up right now. Could you loan me 20 bucks?"
  • "Yeah? What's up Ryan?"

  • This scene is significant to the story because it displays how all their attention is on Chase and they are abandoning their own needs. Gordie discribes how is dad looks very slim. As well, he talks about all the dirty dishes and the stench because of it.
  • Chase barged into the hardware store where Gordie works, asking him for money. This is the first time he has seen Chase since the drugstore. This scene is crucial to the story because it shows how much trust Chase lost from Gordie in this moment. This moment ends up to be the last time Gordie sees Chase in person.
  • This is the scence that ends off the whole book, showing how Ryan was back into drugs. This scene signifiys how easy it is to get caught back into an addiction even when you have seeked help. The author created this scene not to glorify and sugarcoat the hardships and horrors of drug abuse.
