The enmity, or long-running feud, between the Capulets and the Montagues complicates Romeo's fresh new marriage. He tries to keep the peace because Tybalt, a Capulet, is now related to him through marriage, but after Tybalt kills Mercutio, he feels a great feeling of vengeance.
Scene IV
Paris leaving
Capulet summons him and says "a desperate tender of my child's love."
Juliet wishes for night to fall so that Romeo may come to her "untalked of and unseen" at Capulet's mansion. The Nurse hurries in, breaking the news of Romeo and Tybalt's quarrel. However, the Nurse is so upset that she stumbles over the words, giving the impression that Romeo is dead.
Scene V
Romeo is stricken with grief in Friar Lawrence's cell and wonders what penalty the Prince has imposed. Friar Lawrence reminds him that he is fortunate in that the Prince has just exiled him. Romeo says that exile is a far worse punishment than death since he will have to live without Juliet.
When Paris is about to leave, Capulet summons him and offers him "a desperate tender of my child's love." Capulet says he believes his daughter will listen to him, then corrects himself and says he is confident Juliet will follow his lead.
Romeo spends the night with Juliet before departing for exile the next morning. Juliet spends the night with Romeo, attempting to persuade him to stay with her. Her parents inform her that she will marry Paris once he has left. She rejects and seeks assistance from Friar Lawrence.
