  • 1894
  • Hi my name is Giovanni Sacco I'm 11 and my family and I are leaving are hometown Calabria, Italy because my father feels like there are more opportunities in America.
  • Took 8 weeks to get to America, it was very crowded and all there was to eat was bread and only water to drink.
  • Here is your I.D numbers please proceed to testing
  • We arrived at Ellis Island in New York and I was very scared. It was chaotic with a lot of people speaking different languages. My parents were subjected to mental and physical tests.
  • Our name is Sacco, and we were luck to have a short name, others were not as lucky. Processing was overcrowded so names were shortened by registration individuals.
  • Little Italy New York
  • We moved into a tenement in Brooklyn. The living conditions are not the best, but we are working toward a better future. In the beginning it was difficult because we didn't understand English.
  • Our family keeps close contact with the homeland and we surround ourselves with fellow Italians. We feel more comfortable with our own type of people.
  • My mom and dad got new jobs, she is a pieceworker and he is a Masonary. While they are at work I go to school to get a good education.
  • Fast forward to 1980, Gio had two successful boys that experienced the American dream of owning their own restaurant. He had left the city when he was in his mid twenties to start a new journey with his wife. They had two boys who successfully integrated into American lifestyle.Immigration for the first generation isn't easy but the impact on later generations is normally great.
