  • In 1938, he made a second attempt. This time it was a success.
  • From the same year on, the orchestra performs in establishments in the New York and New Jersey area. It takes part in numerous radio programs. The orchestra went on to record a string of hits. The orchestra even appeared in films such as Sun Valley Serenade (1941) and Orchestra Wives (1942). The "Glenn Miller sound" is immediately recognizable: the main melodic line is mostly played by the saxophone section, with a pronounced vibrato, in which the clarinet plays the first voice.
  • Promoted to the rank of captain, he led the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band, a military jazz and dance orchestra that gave over 800 concerts "to boost troop morale", participated in hundreds of radio broadcasts and made numerous recordings. In 1944, the band was based in London. On December 15 of that year, Glenn Miller boarded a small Noorduyn Norseman plane for France to prepare for the arrival of his orchestra. It was a foggy day, and the plane never arrived at its destination.
