General Nathanael Greene moved south to regain South Carolina and Georgia in 1780.Greene’s 1,500 Continental soldiers and the guerrilla units helping were able to defeat small groups one by one. Americans were able to take back most of the area. They were going toward Yorktown.

The American not only surrounded the British in Yorktown by land but also be sea as they were in a peninsula.

Due to the British getting surrounded by 17000 American soldiers, they had no choice but to surrender.

In Yorktown, with an army of almost 8,000 men, Cornwallis camped on a peninsula facing the York River. His aim was to protect the harbor for the use of the British fleet.

The American surrounded the British by sea from one side and from the land other. The land soldiers were commanded by general George Washington. The land soldiers contained many French soldiers.

This achievement meant a lot to Americans. Their dream was coming true. They were getting independence. They could not believe this. And also they defeated Britain was a big thing.
