The Costa Rican Civil War was a war that took place in Costa Rica from March 12th to April 24th, 1948. The conflict began after the results of the presidential elections of 1948 were annulled since the opposite party alleged that the triumph of Otilio Ulate over Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia was achieved by fraud. This triggered an armed uprising, which was led by José Figueres Ferrer, against the government of Teodoro Picado. This war raised many controversies due to the time it took place and the people involved. Additionally, there were events surrounding the elections of 1948 that made the atmosphere more tense.
Introduction
For example, by 1948, the Cold War had begun only 3 years before, meaning that communists were seen as evil-doers by many people at the time. After the Civil War 0f 1948, the agreements of the Pact of the Mexican Embassy (signed by José Figueres Ferrer and Manuel Mora Valverde), established lives, freedom, and the right to political participation of all sides would be respected. This was not kept and the Founding Junta of the Second Republic immediately persecuted and imprisoned the communists and their party was banned. As noted, the stereotype that people had about communists led them to commit awful hate acts. These stereotypes' root is the ignorance and cultural differences that stills can be found in some Costa Ricans' mindsets.
