- My part-time job just reduced my hours and I can no longer pay for rent and am running out of funds to pay for food. I have been homeless for the last 12 days. I've been living in my car but thankfully a friend will be able to host me for the next 4 days.
- Four Days Later
- Thank you Gary for helping me during this difficult time. I've started job hunting for a more stable job but haven't had much luck yet. I am going to submit an application for CalFresh in the meantime to make sure I have food.
- Looks like the whole process will take 7 days. I will have to complete a short interview in 2 days over the phone to verify my information. I won't have an address by the time the card gets mailed to me but thankfully I can pick it up at one of their in-person stations located close to me.
- Looks like I don't have any documents to submit for proof of income, I must have lost them when I had to move out and my job has been giving me a hard time to get copies. Thankfully CalFresh offers a self-attestation option for individuals experiencing homelessness.
- Hello yes, all my information is accurate and correct. I am excited to receive my card to buy groceries in 4 days.
- Two Days Later
- It's been 7 days since I applied. I signed up for text notifications and it looks like my card has arrived and is ready to be picked up at the in-person station I selected. I'm heading over now.
- Hello, can you please verify your name?
- Thank you. Here is your card with an explanation of your benefits, how to check your balance, etc. Inside you will find a list of grocery stores that accept the card in the area and instructions on how to reapply in a year.
- Hello, I am here to pick-up my CalFresh card.
- David Apple.
- Great! Thank you! I'm going to head out to buy groceries now. I'm looking at the locations in the area in the document provided to me and it looks like there is a grocery store on this street that I can go to.
- Thank you! I'm so happy!
