  • In 1974, the Afrikaans Medium Decree forced all black schools to only use Afrikaans and English as the languages of instruction.
  • Peaceful Protest to Absolute Chaos!!
  • On April 30th, 1976 All black students went on strike at Orlando West and all of them didn't want to go to school, although this also spread rebellion to other schools in Soweto.
  • Hector's Death and People Getting Injured
  • All of the students wanted to calmly protest being forced to speak Afrikaans in their schools. All students did a peaceful protest march against the Apartheid laws.

  • Although the students wanted peace and fairness, the FBI did something the hard way by firing shots in the air, which panic all the students in front of them.
  • When the police kept attacks almost all the students, 23 black people died, alongside 12 year old Hector Pieterson who got shot in Orlando West High School, including pictures of Hector dead and being shown around the world. It was also reported that 500 or 600 people were killed and almost 4,000 were injured by the police.
  • Due to all the chaos that happened to innocent people, the Soweto Uprising celebrated as a Holiday in South Africa. Which makes one of the most strongest protests in the fight against Apartheid.
