- Today I felt angry...
- Jonas has been chosen to be the Receiver of Memory.
- This is Jonas. He lives in a world that is 'perfect.' There is no color, fear, or pain.
- This is the Giver giving memories of pain to Jonas

- Every evening, Jonas and his adopted family discuss their 'feelings.'
- At age 12, all the children are considered young adults. They are all given jobs to do in the community. Jonas is chosen to be the Receiver of Memory.
- The Receiver of Memory's job is to hold all the memories of pain,fear, emotion, fun, color, and change.
- As Jonas learns to see color and feel more emotion, he is angry with his friends and family for being happy with there simple lives. He is angrier still when he realizes that when the community releases someone, that person is killed.
- Jonas takes the little boy, Gabe, that is about to be released. They run away. Soon it is snowing. Jonas's hope is that the memories will go back to the community if he goes far enough.
