Storyboard Text

  • My family is from Sri Lanka. Everyone in my family including me was born there. When I was about 5 years old, my parents had chosen to come to the United States. There has been a lot of conflict in my country between cultures. People were being harmed in many ways. This is something that isn't as severe today but there is still tension.
  • My family had come to the United States because they wanted a better education here. My parents had wanted my brother and I to have better opportunities. We didn't have any other family here before us. However, my mom had a family friend who was very close with us. He had been someone who helped us settle comfortably here.
  • The decision to come to the United States was not something that was easy. My parents had put a lot of thought into coming here. After they had decided to come, there were long processes they had to go through. They had to sell our house, get all the correct documents, and more. Even after we had arrived, there were things that they needed to take care of.
  • When we had come to the United States, my parents had expected things to be easier. When you live outside of the U.S., people usually think everything is absolutely better here. However, when we had come here, we realized that was not the case. it was very expensive to live in New York. Things weren't as easy as they had seemed.
  • After we had come to the United States, there were things we needed to get used to. However, we had also continued to followed certain parts of our culture. We would still wear our cultural clothes when we go to certain places. We also still celebrate holidays that we would have if we were still in Sri Lanka. At home, all of us still continue to speak in our language.
  • My family has been in the United States for 11 years now. My brother is a junior in college and is going to graduate next year just like me. We are doing exactly what my parents had come here for. While being here, there have been things that changed and many thing that still stay the same.
