- A "one-step equation" means there is only one step that needs to be done to solve for the variable. To get the variable by itself, you need to use the inverse operation.
- x + 9 = 16

- To undo adding 9 you need to subtract 9
- When you solve an equation, you need to get the variable alone on one side of the equation. In this equation above 9 is added to x. You undo addition by using subtraction as the inverse operation.
- x + 9 = 16 -9 x = 7

- Does that mean the -9 cancels the +9 ?
- 5x = 45
- That's right SonJe'. Now lets do an equation with multiplication.Multiplication and division are inverses. This time you will need to use division to get the variable by itself. An inverse function is a function that undoes the action of the another function.
- 5x = 45 5 5x=9
- Inverses undo each other. Multiplication cancels division in this equation. So to undo multiplying by 5 we must divide both sides by 5.
- To check your answer: Put 9 in for x in the original equation. 5(9) = 45, this means 9 is the correct answer.
- Dividing by 5 cancels out the 5 in front of the x.
