- syd is to young to enlist in the war without a parent signature, He wants to go to war to be with his brother and to go on a great adventure. So he takes matters into his own hands. Next time he was in town he would wait for the Coo=ee marchers and join them on there walk to Melbourne to enlist.

- in addition to the allied v Axis war that is raging in Europe, Syd begins to resent his new life in the army. He had made new mates some older then him some younger. They all had one intention. To end the horror of war in France. Unfortunately adventure would lead them to the horror of Flanders.
- falling action
- Syd an his mates have made the treacheries journey across to France and come across there first taste of war. They were mingle around when all the suddenly an ear destroying sound rumbles the earth. Artillery shells come raining down all around them. They drop to the floor praying they don't get hit. This was there first taste of war, They haven't even reached the trenches yet.
- reseloution
- After the artillery barrage had finished syd ran out the sand bagged tent to see 2 of his mates blown up to a million pieces in front of the tent. he dropped to his knee in pain and emotion he bowed his head and said good bye to his mates.
- While syd is mourning the death of two of his best mates in his unit, He gets a letter from his brother battalion. He reads the letter and dropped to his knees. His brother was killed in the same artillary barrage that had killed his two friends. He howled in emotion
- Both of Sydney's lieutenants come up to him to inform him that he has been issuded to deploy back home to Australia. Reason being that, his parents had found out about his brother George's death and wanted him home befire they lost him as well.
