Lucretia Motts and Elizabeth Cady Stanton met in 1840 at the world Anti-Slavery Convention in London, the women were outraged when they discovered that women could not speak at the meeting and they wanted to do something about it.
I cannot believe that women are not allowed to speak here! I have opinions that I want to share too!
I have an idea. What if we hold a convention! One where women can speak, and we can discuss with others about this issue!
The women thought that creating equal rights was necessary because they wanted to be able to voice their opinions too. They wanted to be able to read the speeches they wrote and get an equal education that the men got. Even though Lucretia Motts was 47 and Elizabeth Cady Stanton was only 25, they knew they could work well together.
I never want to experience a convention like the one in London, what should we do to create equal rights?
8 years later the two women met up and held a convention, it was at Seneca Falls. 300 people including 40 men showed up to the convention!
This is much more successful then I thought it would be.
Who knew so many men would show up to a women's rights movement!?
At the convention they decided to create the Declaration of Sentiments, they based this off of the Declaration of Independence. The declaration listed acts of tyranny by men over woman. At the convention some other women also stood up and spoke about what they thought.
Alright everyone, lets create a Declaration of Sentiments to show why women should have rights!
After the convention, women started fighting for the right to vote, people continued to speak out for women's rights, and slowly, reformers for women's rights made progress. Things that the women wanted like going to school and freedom of speech came true!
I think we have done something really good for people.
