Athena talks to Zeus, she wants Calypso to allow Odysseus leave her island. Zeus sends Hermes, messenger of the gods, to Calypso's island to tell her that Odysseus must be allowed to leave so he can return home. Calypso helps him build a new boat and stocks it with food and drink. A theme here is one of grief. "Odysseus was sitting on the shore, as ever in those days, having his heart's sorrow, staring out to sea, with hollow, salt-rimmed eyes." Pg. 272
Odysseus comes to the land of the Phaeacians on the island of Scheria of King Alcinous & Queen Arete. Athena flies there disguised as a young girl like their daughter, Princess Nausicaa. Athena suggests she wash herself on the shore. They wake Odysseus and he asks for help. He cleans himself and Athena makes him beautiful.They give him food and drink. He makes his way to town to beg the King and Queen for mercy. Theme: Divine Intervention. "So Athena herself made Odysseus' head and shoulders shimmer with grace, the princess was dazzled."
