  • Yes, could you explain how this test works?
  • Of course, an indication to perform this test is pain in the right upper quadrant so we are basically imaging your gallbladder to see if thats causing your pain
  • Hello! My name is Jimena and I will be your nuclear medicine technologist today. Looks like your doctor ordered a HIDA scan for you.
  • That is fine. So for this HIDA scan, I will inject a radiopharmaceutical called Mebrofenin intravenously, and there is no side effects from this. I will put you under the gamma camera and image for 1 hour to see if your Gallbladder shows up or any blockages.
  • If it does show up on our scan, we will give you CCK and image for another hour. If it does not visualize, we will have to wait 30 min to 1 hour more and see if it shows up then.
  • Yes, my last meal was 5 hours ago
  • Before we start, it is important that you had nothing to eat in the past 2-6 hours, but not more than 24 hours. Have you been fasting?
  • No I am not.
  • Okay, seems like a long test but I can handle it. What does the CCK do?
  • It is also important that you are not taking any opioids. Your chart does not have any contraindicating medications but i just want to make sure.
  • So when you receive CCK, it acts as if you just ate a fatty meal causing your Gallbladder to contract. This helps your doctor rule out acute or chronic cholecystitis
  • Okay, we can go ahead and get started. Lay down under the gamma camera and we will start imaging you.
