  • TheEarths original atmosphere was mainly hydrogen and helium.
  • 3.5 billion years ago.. nitrogen, carbon dioxide and methane can also be found. While traces of oxygen can be seen in water only.
  • In the ocean a microbial species that's floating evolved a new ability calledPHOTOSYNTHESIS
  • Then.. The GREAT OXYGENATION CATASTROPHE occurred when cyanobacteria living in the oceans started producing oxygen through photosynthesis.
  • As oxygen built up in the atmosphere anaerobic bacteria were killed leading to the Earth's first mass extinction
  • 2 billion years ago ICE AGE occuredWherein Methane and Oxygen reacted to form carbon dioxide and water then forming Ice all over earth.
  • With the help of aerobic organisms they absorbed the excess gas in the atmosphere. Eventually the oxygen concentration in the atmosphere normalized to 21% until now.
  • Animals take in oxygen and give off carbon dioxide.Plants take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen.Plants and animals thrive in balance.
  • Because of the chemical energy of oxygen it gave the organisms the boost to diversify and evolve to a more complex form.
