With the help of aerobic organisms they absorbed the excess gas in the atmosphere. Eventually the oxygen concentration in the atmosphere normalized to 21% until now.
Animals take in oxygen and give off carbon dioxide.Plants take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen.Plants and animals thrive in balance.
Because of the chemical energy of oxygen it gave the organisms the boost to diversify and evolve to a more complex form.
