  • 1. Chewing
  • 2. Entering the stomach
  • 3. Entering the small intestine
  • The 1st step of the digestive is chewing. It is the only type of mechanical digestion in your body. All the other parts of the digestive system are types of chemical digestion. We have to bite the food to swallow it. If we don't chew our food we can't swallow it. Saliva can also help break down the food only when the solid food has already been broken into smaller pieces.
  • 4. Entering the large intestine
  • After the 1st step is done the food travels through the esophagus and enters the stomach. The stomach produces acids that break down the food even more. The liver produces enzymes that break down proteins and the pancreas produces enzymes that break down all other sorts of food. This picture has a color code. The liver is red in color, the pancreas is blue in color and the stomach is green in color. All the other parts of the digestive system are white.
  • 5. Exiting the body
  • After the food is broken down by the stomach it enters the small intestine where the nutrients and minerals are absorbed. The small intestine is known as the 'small intestine' because it has a small opening but it is 25 feet long. Here is an image of the small intestine.
  • Glossary
  • The large intestine is where water is absorbed by the body. It is known as the 'large intestine' because it has a large opening but it is only 5 feet long. It is 20 feet shorter than the small intestine. It contains small villi/microvilli that absorb the water and send it to different parts of the body. If there is some waste it is not absorbed by the large intestine. Neither is it absorbed by the small intestine. Here is an image of the large intestine.
  • The waste isn't absorbed by the body. It is of no use to the body so we excrete the waste through the anus. The waste is flushed into the toilet.
  • 1. Esophagus - A long pipe that allows the food to enter the stomach. It's also known as the 'food pipe'.2. Enzymes - A substance produced by the body.3. Acids - A substance produced by the stomach.
