- Humans mine resources such as coal, iron and oil.#160; These resources are procured beneath the surface of the Earth and these remain a limited supply due to these taking million of years to develop
- The fossil fuels are burnt in industrial factories such as these which provide cities with the necessary electricity which is used in everyday life.
- Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide are released into the atmosphere due to these factories which burns immense amounts of fossil fuels. When these react with water, they create sulfuric and nitric acid.
- The wind then disperses and carries these acidic gases over long distances.
- Acid rain heavily effects the wildlife such as fish within the streams and rivers which are contaminated by the acid rain. It also corrodes stone due to its pH level of 4.2 - 4.4.
- The soluble acidic gases when dissolved in rain forms acid rain.
- After the acid rain rains down from the clouds, they enter water systems as runoff and when absorbed into the soil, they poison the soil. This is done by the acid rain increasing the pH of the soil and this kills the nutrients the soil provides plants, which the plants need for growth.
