  • I am King of the Phaeacian people. We live on the island of Scherie. My wife Queen Arte and I have 5 sons and one daughter. We just provided Odysseus with safe passage in one of our fine black ships back to his country of Ithaca.
  • When Poseidon saw us giving safe passage to Odysseus, he was outraged. He told Zeus that we would pay for escorting Odysseus home.
  • As the black ship neared its home, the seas were calm and the sun bright. The people on the island of Scherie were waving and welcoming their townspeople back when suddenly Poseidon turned the ship into a rock.
  • The people started to panic and went to King Alcinuous for help. He cried and said"Unfortunately the prophecy my father once told me has come true. He said Poseidon has never been happy with us Phaeacians being granted safe passage to travelers when no harm comes to us.
  • The prophecy says that one of our black ships will be wrecked and a wall of mountains will surround our city. Let us give up this custom of seeing travelers home safely and sacrifice 12 bulls to Poseidon and pray he takes pity on us. We do not want a mountain of walls around our city or our livelihood is over. All the weeping townspeople agreed and prepared a sacrificial banquet for him.
  • Poseidon, hear our prayer and plea. This sacrifice if for you. Spare us Phaeacians from any more harm. We will no longer see travelers home. Have pity on us and and accept our sacrifice. Poseidon heard and decided not to put a wall of mountains around them. Instead he made their days full of dark gloomy rain.
  • King Alcinuous said "Minstrel, continue to sing about how Odysseus sacked Troy. Now add how our great ship was turned into rock and how we now suffer with gloomy dark rain. Sing Minstrel so we never forget!"
  • Several months later, Poseidon sent a ship wrecked traveler from a distant country to the island of Scherie. The traveler asks King Alcinuous for safe passage home. The King says "we Phaeacians can no longer provide safe passage but we can offer you food, wine, and hospitality while you listen to our Minstrel's songs.
  • When Poseidon heard this, he knew the Phaeacians were honoring their word. He then stopped the gloomy dark rain and gave them sunshine
  • King Alcinuous said "Poseidon has forgiven us! Minstrel add this happy ending to your songs for all to hear. Quick, lets offer up a thanksgiving and rejoice!
