Storyboard Text

  • Raylene is at a party, and is being pressured into drinking alcohol, but she does not want to. She does not know the people there well and is 16, therefore underage. What should she do?
  • HEHE!! Raylene is a scaredy cat, Raylene is a scared cat!! CACKLE CACKLE!
  • Raylene! Have a beer - don't be a wimp, hahaha!!!
  • Raylene should not respond passively because alcohol is bad for you, especially for young female adults. It is also against the law to drink alcohol under the age of 18 without a guardian; if Raylene did drink the beer she could get in trouble with the law. Alcohol can cause you to behave erratically too, putting you into danger.
  • Raylene should not respond passively also because passive responses can cause people to use you and walk all over you. A passive response is where you do not voice your opinions, instead succumbing to peer pressure. Responding passively to this situation would not be a health enhancing option.
  • Chug it! Chug it!
  • Okay, fine - I will drink it.
  • I really do not want to drink it though! Oh well.
  • An aggressive response would therefore not be a health enhancing decision.
  • Raylene should not respond aggressively because this could get her into danger. She does not know the people at the party very well and they have been drinking alcohol; she does not know how they would react if she got angry. Her responding aggressively may lead to a fight, with her getting injured.
  • You'll pay for this buster!!!
  • No way am I drinking that alcohol! You guys are a bunch of dimwits! HOW DARE YOU IDIOTS try to force me into drinking that junk!!!!
  • Assertiveness is a balanced response. It is neither passive nor aggressive, but responds as an equal to others and does not hurt the values and beliefs of others aggressively. An assertive response firmly states your opinion confidently. By responding assertively you are standing up for yourself.
  • Thanks for the offer, but no. I am underage and plus, alcohol is bad for the body. I will also be driving home.
  • Raylene should respond assertively. This is an example of a assertive response.
  • By being assertive, Raylene would end up with a positive, health-enhancing result. By being assertive she would drink the beer. By not drinking the alcohol, Raylene would be protecting her body from the negative effects that the drug can have. She would also not be breaking the law. By responding assertively, she has less of a chance of getting into a fight than she would by responding aggressively too.
  • If you are being pressured into drinking, respond assertively! Assertiveness leads to the most positive, health-enhancing outcomes. By being assertive, you may also inspire others to say no to the alcohol as well, therefore protecting their health from the effects of alcohol too.
  • Okay, that is fine.
