- Event #1The important people were,William Howe,William Prescott, Major John Pitcairn, Israel Putnam.First William Howe was the commander in chief of the British army at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Major General William Howe, leading the British forces, could have easily surrounded the Americans with his ships at sea, but instead chose to march his troops uphill. Second,Colonel William Prescott served as one of the ranking officers on the field for the New England militia during the Battle of Bunker Hill. He oversaw the overnight construction of the redoubt on top of Breed's Hill. Thrid,Major Pitcairn commanded a reserve force of about 300 Marines. They landed at the south end of the Charlestown peninsula. When the first assaults failed, Pitcairn led his men up the hill toward the American position. Fourth,Israel Putnam was one of the two principal commanders at the battle of Bunker Hill and Breed's Hill, where his personal courage showed to good advantage.
