- Kino, Juana and Coyotito all lived in poverty by the beach. Surrounded by other brush houses like their own. Although they were poor they were still happy with their big happy family.
- One day they noticed a scorpion on the rope where coyotito's box hang. In the box COyotito was lying their. Kino and Juana filled with nerve that their baby will get stung slowly approached the scorpion. In the attempts of getting the scorpion off they were too late and it sadly stung coyito leaving him miserable and ill.
- They hurried to a doctor who lived in a upper class area in search for a cure. But the Doctor didn't want to provide them with any service if they don't give him a payment up front. The racial discrepancies was also a barrier between the reason why he didn't want to see coyotito. The doctor didn't care and only looked at them like a burden.
- After receiving the news Kino was filled with anger. He felt resent towards the doctor but he wasn't giving up on his baby. Only a doctor would be able to cure Coyito and he is willing to break his back for. He needed a pearl. A pearl was the only thing tht will allow this to happen.
