  • CHAPTER 3
  • Annabelle stood on the path of wood hollow thinking about the snake when she sees betty walking towards her. Then Betty threatens her to bring her something because she thinks that Anabelle is rich by having a purple window, running water, electricity, and a house big enough to fit three generations, or else she would beat her with a stick. Then she told her if she didn't come she would throw a rock at the little one James. She thought about what she would give him but she only had a piggy bank and the coins in it, silver dollar and books. A beaver muff a lace collar that she snapped onto her church dresses. A pair of white cotton gloves that were too small and a sweater frog that I had borrowed from my aunt Lily and she had not asked about it since.

  • Anabelle had said that it felt like a war between both of them. Then she said that she hadn't felt that much fear more than the war. After she said that one day her brothers would have to fight with the Nazis even though some farm boys were spared. Some families would listen to the radio after dinner about the talk of concentration camps, which she thought at first meant places where people went to think hard thoughts. She wasn't even scared of her aunt that was A tall, thin, ugly woman who might have been handsome as a man, and her nights praying and reading from her Bible and practicing dance steps in thesmall patch of floor at the foot of her bed.
  • CHAPTER 4
  • There would be a lot of people walking past the farm Anabelle said but only one person called Toby stayed. He was very quiet didn't ask for food or money nobody knew where he came from A lot of people worried about Toby as he walked the woods and valleys in his long, black oilcloth coat and his black boots, long black hair, and beard, and always three long guns slung across his back. He would stay in the smokehouse that was covered with mostly trees she imagined that he would use the hooks to cook meat and he would be really warm in there when they put fire in the smokehouse. They were all surprised when Toby asked for the camera they had gotten by winning it in the best portrait contest. Then they started using the camera to take pictures of other people who asked them with it and they would get money from it. It all started when Anabelle was taking pictures of some blossoms and then Toby came up to her and asked Anabelle if she was taking pictures of the blossoms and she nodded her head.
  • Annabelle was telling stories about when Toby had helped her get home when she sprained her ankle in a ground hole he carried her back home.Another time he helped them was when Annabelle's dad hurt his back and then toby helped by picking all the pumpkins for them in the middle of the night them her mom baked him a pie and toby cleaned the plate and left it at their house.
  • The next day Anabelle went to school and she took a penny to Betty and betty got so bad she beat her up with a stick and was about to hit her for the third time but Anabelle starting crying and told her to bring her another thing. That night she went to aunt lily's room and asked her about the sweater to see what she would say planning for her to tell her to keep it so she could give it to betty.
