Figurative Language
The most important setting in Every Last Word is the hidden stage where the Poets Corner would meet. Lots of important things took place on this stage. It's where Sam came to terms with her OCD, the developement of AJ and Sam's relationship (including where he played a song he wrote for her), and it's mostly where Sam's most important character developement happened. This was one of the few places Sam could actually see Caroline too, which made it their special place for just the two of them (also known as Sam and her own subconcious mind).
The climax takes place at lunch when Sam finds out that Caroline was just in her imagination. Caroline Marsh was indeed a real girl, but she commited suicide years before Sam was born after being bullied in high school. Sam had rad an article about her, and according to her therapist, had made Caroline into the person Sam truly wanted to be. All the traits Sam wished she had such as bravery, a child-like careless attitude. Sam had asked AJ about Caroline and he had no idea who she was talking about. This led to AJ confronting Sam and learning about her OCD and medication.
One thing that Sam always looked towards when her mind was consuming her was swimming. She was a competetive swimmer, and when her thoughts became too much she would go swimming no matter if it was 9pm or 6am. One night at the pool she says But now, everything is so quiet. Not just the pool, but my mind, too. I don't even feel the urge to swim to the beat of a song. Sam is using the sielnce she feels as a metaphor to describe how calm she feels at the moment. It's a very important metaphor used all throughout the book to describe Sam's character development.
