- Charlie Gordon is a 37 year old student of Ms. Kinnian who has an IQ of 68 but really wants to "get smart". He is recruited by a researcher named Mr. Strauss to undergo an operation that he is told may make him smarter, and he agrees.
- CLIMAX
- The two researchers, Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur, have Charlie race to complete mazes against a mouse named Algernon whose intelligence was increased through surgery. Charlie loses every time at first but soon he starts winning!
- FALLING ACTION
- As Charlie gets smarter, he realizes that his friends have been making fun of his intelligence this whole time and is hurt.
- RESOLUTION
- Charlie is bitten by Algernon which sends him into a spiral of research, determined to find out what will happen to his intelligence as soon as possible. He comes to the conclusion that he will rapidly lose all the intelligence he gains and this is inevitable.
- Charlie is told that Algernon died and is devastated because he considered Algernon his friend.
- Charlie leaves New York as his intelligence rapidly declines and he is depressed.
