Abeba is loaded onto a ship on the lower deck, It is dark and compact, and they are fed once a day. It smells, as people puke and use the restroom in one area Every so often, they are let aboard the top of the ship, and forced to dance as exercise. Abeba is fearful, and thinks of his wife and home for comfort.
It took Abebas ship 6 months to reach America. After getting on land, him and others who were captured, are taken to a cabin and examined, before being auctioned off, or gone write to their new masters. Abeba knows little to no English. The doctor marks his height and strength. Abeba is sad and confused. He knows he will never see home again
