Storyboard Text

  • Circe, may we retrieve the body of our good friend and fellow companion Elpenor, who had perished by falling off of you roof?
  • Odysseus and his crew then hold a funeral with all proper rites in Elpenor's honor, weeping for him as is custom. They stay another day due to the crew's pleading
  • *Crying Noises*
  • Odysseus and his crew, after staying a full year on the island of Aeaea, are ready to leave, but before they go, Circe warns Odysseus about the dangers he will face.
  • Men, we will soon approach the island of the sirens, whose song lures ships to go towards them and wreck upon the rocks. Take these ear plugs I made from beeswax so that you will not hear their song. I will be tied to the mast of the ship, for I would like to hear their song.
  • As the men left Circe's island, then approached the first challenge that Circe had warned them about: the island of the Sirens, whose song lead men to their death.
  • At the beginning of Book 12 of Homer's The Odyssey , Odysseus and his men travel back to Circe's island to retrieve the dead body of their fellow companion, Elpenor, who died falling off of Circe's roof because he was drunk.
  • Let go of me! I must get closer to hear the Sirens' songs!
  • First you will pass the island of the Sirens, who song lures sailors to their death. Give your crew earplugs made out of beeswax to block out their song. Next you will either choose to follow along the coast against the Clashing Rocks, which no ship has ever emerged unscathed except for the Argos, or pass through the narrow strait, which two monsters, the six headed, serpent like Scylla, and the whirlpool, Charybdis, dwell. Finally, once you pass the strait, you will come across the island of Thrinacia, where Helios, the sun god, keeps his cattle. if you kill as much as one cattle, your crew will be killed and your ship will be destroyed.
  • Men, we will pass through this strait and hug the side closest to Scylla to avoid losing the whole ship to Charybdis. Losing a few men will be better than losing everyone and the ship.
  • After the crew passed the island of the Sirens, the then came upon their next challenge: either travel along the coast against the Clashing Rocks, or pass through the narrow strait that houses Scylla, a six-headed, serpent-like monster, and Charybdis, a deadly whirlpool.
  • As Odysseus and his crew began to pass by the Sirens' island, their deadly song started up. The beeswax ear plugs worked though, and the men went about rowing and performing their usually duties on board. Odysseus, tied to the mast of the ship, complained for his men to let him go. Despite this, the crew managed to sail passed safely.
