- It was a beautiful Sunday Morning, and 13-year-old Skylar was getting ready to open shop at her Grandfather’s fruit market. For the 4th time this week, Skylar Ly had been helping her Grandpa at Fruit Mania. After her Grandmother's death, business at the market had been slow. Skylar’s Grandparents had always run the family business together, ever since they had immigrated to Canada from Vietnam at the height of World War Two. Skylar enjoys helping her grandpa at the store, but the extra hours she’s been spending at the store has hindered her ability to finish any of her homework.
- Sunday
- At school, Skylar often lies about why she couldn’t finish her homework. She feels that if she had told her teacher, Mrs.Gupta, about her Grandfather’s struggling business, the whole school would soon learn about her family’s financial predicament. Mrs. Gupta knew that there was something else happening in Skylar’s life, so Mrs. Gupta decided to have a meeting with Skylar's parents
- So that's why I left my math homework at home...because I'm still emotional from morning my Mother's, friend's ,cousin's pet lizard's death.
- Monday
- On Tueday after school , Mrs Gupta invites SMr and Mrs Ly for a meeting in her classrom. Mrs.Gupta expresses concern for Skylar's rececent school record.
- Well..... Most days she has been working overtime at my Family's fruit market. When she comes home she is always tired. After her Grandmother died it's been hard keeping the buissness afloat
- Tuesday
- I'm concernced for Skylar's grades. She hasn't been completing her homework recently , and her marks have dropped drastically. When I've questionned her, she only makes up excuses for why she couldn't complete her homework. I 'm afraid, that with her current grades, she won't be able to attend our anual week-long grade 8 leadership trip to Montreal.
- Oh No! She'll be devestated!
- Is there something going on at home that may be worrining or upsetiting her?
- When Mr. and Mrs. Ly came home, they told Skylar that she could no longer go on the Grade 8 Leadership Trip. Needless to say, Skylar was very upset.
- My life ..(sniffle) is OVER!?!?!
- Later on....
- Honey , it's not that bad
- One week later Skylar walks to school. She talks to Mrs.Gupta teacher about her missing assignments, and asks what she can do to increase her grades.
- I know Mrs. Gupta I was jus emberassed. I thought that maybe if I had told you, the whole school would know. Is there any way I can increase my grade average now?
- One Week Later
- Overcourse there is! By the tiime you graduate you'll be the smertest student in the class!
- You should have talked to me,. I could have been able to help you. You wouldn't have had to miss out on the trip,
