Hi! My name is Iris and I am an

igneous rock. I heard you wanted to learn about the rock cycle...so, allow me to take you through my life

anecdote! There's lots of twists and turns, but that's what I love about it!

Welcome to my home! It's

beautiful here, right? I start out as

magma, which is molten rock that is deep inside the Earth. Over time, I cool down (THANK GOODNESS!) and solidify. My crystals are VERY large. The water you see plays a big role in the next step of my life!

Yay, here we are! There's nothing better than the beach. Thankfully, I got to relax before erosion starts! I am being broken into small

fragments, also known as

sediments.

As you can see, my sediments have been moved to a new location. Now, I go through a LONG process

(I'm talking hundreds or even

THOUSANDS of years!) of sedimentation and

compaction. My sediments accumulate together, and layers begin to form. Then, over time, my

sediments are compacted and my upper layers apply lots of pressure to the lower layers, creating a sedimentary rock!

Now, I'm getting toasty by the fire! Ouch, I am feeling large amounts of heat and

pressure. My shape and structure have changed, but I have not completely melted. Instead, I've rearranged. I am now a

metamorphic rock. Hint: I've morphed into something else!

Finally, we are back home. Home is where the heart is! :) I'll turn back into magma and go through these steps again and again. This cycle is never-ending! Thank you for coming along with me!
