Please! Get me a new home. Mr. Covey is torturing me!
Master Thomas
You desereve it, I'm sure. Go back to Mr. Covey now!
On a hot day in august, Frederick Douglass and a few other slaves were working and fanning wheat. Due to the hard work F.D. had been doing, he had a moment of weakness and soon fainted.
Take this root, it will protect you!
Sandy
Once it was known that F.D was not feeling well, Mr. Covey soon came over and see how he was doing. Mr. Covey did not care how he was doing and demanded that F.D get up, but he was unable to do so. Mr. Covey continues to beat him regardless of the state F.D is in.
No, I won't back down!
After that incident, F.D decided to make an escape to see his old Master Thomas. This walk was incredibly difficult for F.D since he was very weak. F.D arrived at Master Thomas's store covered in blood and other injuries.
Mr. Covey will never hit, yell, or whip me again!
Once F.D arrived back at Mr. Covey's he was soon welcomed to another whipping, however, F.D was able to stop this by running away to the woods once again. He then ran into a fellow slave, Sandy Jenkins, who invited him to his home after he had been told F.D's situation. Sandy gave F.D a root that should protect him from being hit by Mr. Covey. F.D takes this root and carries it with him.
After F.D's return from Sandy's house, Mr. Covey traps F.D in the barn with a whip. However, F.D did not let this action go through and fought Mr. Covey. F.D won this battle and Mr. Covey had finally been defeated.
Since F.D won the battle between himself and Mr. Covey, Mr. Covey has never laid a finger on F.D ever again. This level of success rekindled his fire for freedom.
