Adam, you need a firm grip on a handshake. None of this loose wrist nonsense. People in business won't take you seriously.
And by the end of the day, something that was supposed to bring us together had made us aggravated with each other.
Ever since I can remember, my Grandpa was in a hurry to see me grow up.
Grandpa, what's business?
4 years old
He drove my Mom a little crazy sometimes.
5 years old
Nonsense. When I was his age, I had an actual rifle.
When we got home that day, we both tried to make the most of it.
Dad, he's too young for guns.
You need to know how to use a torque wrench and Philips head screwdriver or you won't get very far.
But we felt further away than ever.
Maybe it was because he had been at work so much when his daughters were growing up...
6 years old
Do you want to see my action figure?
Or maybe it was that he never had a son of his own...
This is a 1965 Mustang
Absolutely not.
Can I touch it?
To my family, this was not a surprise, and not a big deal.
But the man I would become always seemed more real to him than the child I was.
You could be a Vice President in a building like that someday.
How tall are those?!
Even when I didn't understand, or my Grandpa wasn't that great at what he was trying to teach me, I cherished these moments that made me feel closer to him.
This is really burnt.
But that didn't make me feel any less lost or more connected to him.
Looks good!
And THAT'S how you barbecue Chicken, Adam
Our family still jokes about the time he wanted to teach me how to play golf...
I'm sure soccer is fun, but real men need to know how to play golf.
Of course, but you have to pay attention.
...but the more I think about that day, the more I realize that I was never going to become the man my Grandpa wanted me to be.
Can you teach me?
It started out as you would expect...
Just focus on the ball and try to swing the club all the way through.
But soon, Grandpa was frustrated.
You're not keeping the club head straight. You're not listening at all.
Why isn't he happy with me? I'm trying.
What's the matter with this kid? He doesn't listen to anything?
I just wanted to spend time with him, I don't know anything about golf.
How'd it go you two?
Great.
Don't worry about it honey, he's always been great at doing things, but it's harder for him to teach things.
It felt like becoming an adult who would please him was a journey that was longer and more difficult than I knew what to do with.
In a way, it felt like we were from different planets.
And ever since that day, I've been trying to find a way to grow up enough, be manly enough, and have goals that were big enough for my Grandpa in the hopes that I could close that distance.
