- You're less than a nobody, you're nothing. You don't have any documentation that proves you exist.
- Baldini was overjoyed that Grenouille was a nobody as he explained to him, his apprentice "needed to be of faultless." He knew he could use Grenouille's help to build his perfume empire.
- Grenouille would not receive the help of Baldini in obtaining his legal papers (which he needed to travel) until he helped him become a great perfumer with his formulas. Grenouille agreed to his terms and got to work.
- Grenouille making formulas for the man
- With the formulas Grenouille produced Baldini grew incredibly rich! He was a huge success. He had built a factory and received a royal patient. His perfumes were sold all making him one of Paris' richest citizens. Baldini was now 70 and had become Europe's greatest perfumer.
- I will release you and hand you your journeyman's papers on three conditions....
- When Baldini no long had any use of Grenouille he grants him his journeyman's papers and sends him off on three conditions: 1. He would not be allowed to produce or sell any perfumes in the future using his old formulas that Baldini possess2. He must leave Paris and never return for as long as Baldini lived3. He has to keep this all a secret.
- Okay, I accept your terms.
- Oh no! I must not touch him.
- Baldini sends him away with money, food, some clothing, a blanket, and a rucksack. When Baldini and Grenouille part ways as he's leaving Paris, they do not shake hands. Baldini senses something infectious about Grenouille.
- Grenouille ducks away and leaves the street of Paris empty.
