Making her way to Los Angeles, Jude was introduced. The author introduced her by saying. "He wouldn't have been surprised at all to learn that she was a runner--that lean, boyish body, those long legs. He smoked his cigarette, watching her make another lap around the bus. Too bad, those legs with that face. That skin. Jesus, he'd never seen a woman that black before." (Bennett 91). Obtaining the build from her father, Jude is compared to a track runner and on the taller side. Her skin on the other hand is very offsetting for others around her, leading to disrespectful comments.

Being the only darker complexion person on the team, Jude still stood out athletically. The author was able to mention this by saying, "After she won the gold medal at the state championship, no one congratulated her but Coach Weaver. Still, she ran, She ran because she loved it, because she wanted to be good at something" (Bennett 100). Jude was such a great athlete to the point of her being a state champ. Even though she didn't get her deserved credit from her team, she was able to enjoy the sport and succeed.

What does Jude think about?
While making love with Reese, Jude stops and says, "I'm sorry, she said. I'm just thinking. About that white girl? He sighed. Baby, you gotta stop. You're playing a dangerous game. It's not a game, she said. It's my family."(Bennett 270). Since Jude is spending so much time around Kennedy while knowing that they're related, its bugging her alot not saying anything. Ever since the encounter with Stella during the wine bottle night, Jude can't think of anything else.
