Storyboard Text

  • Oedipus the Kingby SophoclesEpisode 1
  • Thebans
  • Since I have no connection to Laius' murder, I order that whoever knows the true nature of his murder must come forward. They will not be harmed. If you keep your knowledge, you will suffer. I curse myself if I prove to be accommodating the murderer.
  • Oedipus
  • Speaking for all of us, we haven't killed Laius, and Tiresias is the one who shall give us answers!
  • Chorus Leader
  • Laius' murder should have been solved! I will do everything to solve his murder, something you all should have done years ago. I curse those who do not help me, but I will let us all thrive in this city of Thebes if you cooperate with my plans.
  • Oedipus
  • Tiresias
  • Please let me go home. It will spare us both this burden. I mustn't reveal your dreadful secrets.
  • If you know more, say your truth. Help save Thebes.
  • Oedipus
  • Tiresias
  • You are angry with me, yet know nothing of the evil you are surrounded with. Oedipus, you are the murderer that has brought this suffering on Thebes! You live in shame.
  • Why would you say such a thing? Why would you lie and tell such a tale? You couldn't have learned this from your prophet's trade. You are blind, and so is your mind. Did you and Creon come up with this crazy idea?
  • Oedipus
  • Tiresias
  • You must respect me. I am a prophet representing the Gods. You have vision, yet can't even fathom to see the darkness that contains you. You don't know who your parents are, and one day you will find out the true nature of your wedding. Your life of pity is the worst of them all. You summoned me, and now you don't want to hear the truth. If you are so smart, solve my "riddles". Your good is what brought sufferings on Thebes. I shall go, but the murderer of Laius is in Thebes. He thinks he is foreign, but he is native. Blind to his evil, he will now go blind on foreign soil. He will be revealed to be the murderer of his father. If I am wrong, then I have no prophetic insight.
  • Creon must be plotting to drive me out of my power. I solved the Sphinx's riddle, me. You offered no prophetic insight. You and Creon will pay. I won't listen to you. You speak like a fool. Everything you say is a riddle. Go away, Tiresias.
  • Oedipus
  • Stasimon 1
  • Who really is the man that killed Laius? We cannot support the prophet, nor go against him. We are confused. Logically, Oedipus wouldn't have killed Laius. We shouldn't blemish Oedipus' name without reason. We wonder whether one man can know the whole truth, more than us. We won't blame Oedipus until there is evidence. Oedipus is wise and saved Thebes, so I can't think of him in a guilty manner.
