- Self distruction
- Tom and the devil made an agreement that if Tom did something for the devil he would give him money. Tom thought that the devil would follow through and did whatevr he asked. Once the devil was satisfied he whisked him like a child into the saddle and Carried him away. Tom was never seen again. This shows self distruction because it wouldn't have happened if Tom was smart enough to say no.

- This shows guilt. Tom felt guilty for the things he had done like making deals with the devil. He became a violent church goer and he prayed loudly and strenuously, as if heavan were to be taken by force of lungs. Tom wanted to be forgiven for this wrongs and because he was trying to get God to forgive him, it shows his guilt.

- This shows pessimistic view of man because the couple is so miserable and can't really stand each other. The wife is discribed as a tall termagnet, fierce of temper, loud of tongue, and strong of arm.
