- ~Attempt at Compromise~
- Lincoln won a majority of the electoral votes -180-303. Lincoln's name did not appear on the ballot in most southern states. In conclusion, the more populous north outvoted the south.
- ~The Confederacy~
- The national government refused the fugitive slave law and denied southern states equal rights in the territories. In December 1860 the south decided to leave the union when South Carolina voted to secede.
- ~Reactions to Secession~
- On December 18, 1860, Senator John Crittenden proposed a series of amendments to the constitution to make a compromise but the south and the republicans both disagreed.
- ~Presedential Responses~
- 7 new states from the South decided to meet in Alabama on February 4 to form a new nation and government. They named themselves the Confederate States of America, as well as choosing Jefferson Davis as their president,
- Many southerners welcomed succession. Some northerners allowed the union to fall apart. But most Northerners believed that the union must be preserved.
- In Lincolns' inauguration, he mixed peace with words of toughness, he said secession would not be permitted. At the same time, Lincoln pleaded with the people of the South for reconciliation.
- We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection.
