- France wanted support from the Americans because they helped us in the war. But the US didn't have enough money or resources to help the French. So President Washington declared neutrality on France. Then the french started attacking US ships.
- Barbary Pirates
- The United States wanted the British navy to stop attacking US merchant ships and create a new treaty with Britain. But France saw the new treaty as a threat. So the French navy attacked US ships. Then the US sent envoys to France.
- Embargo Act
- STOP ALL TRADE!
- United States wanted France to stop the attacks on the US. But, Talleyrand refused to speak to Americans. So, he sent secret agents to ask for tribute. Then the envoys said no to tribute and the US started preparing for war.
- War of 1812
- Tripoli and other Barbary states wanted tribute from the US. But Jefferson refused to pay for tribute. So Tripoli declared war on the US. Then the US signed a treaty with the US. Tripoli stopped asking for tribute.
- United States wanted to halt trade with all other countries. But over 55,000 sailors lost their jobs. So the US returned ships back to sea. Then french and Britain continued to attack the US.
- The United States wanted the British to stop attacking ships and impressing US sailors. But, the US was trading with France. So, madison declared war. Then the British stopped attacking US ships at sea and France and Britain stopped fighting.
