Hey, do you want to go trick-or-treating with me later ?
Sorry I can't, I have to celebrate Dia de los Muertos with my family.
What's Dia de los Muertos?
It is a Mexican holiday to remember all those who have died
Dia de los Muertos is a holiday that lasts for two days. It is celebrated on November 1st and November 2nd. The reason it is celebrated on two days is because one day is for children who died to reunite with the living and another day is for the adults who died to reunite with the living.
Dia de los Muertos is a holiday to remember all our loved ones that passed away. Dia de los Muertos is celebrated mainly in Mexico but also throughout Latin America. Also, it is believed that it started around 3000 years ago.
To celebrate Dia de los Muertos, some people go to the grave of their loved one/s. They pray and decorate the grave. The decorate the grave with marigold flowers. Marigolds one of the traditional symbols for Dia de los Muertos.
Also families sometimes clean the graves at cemeteries. They clean any debris there is and pull weeds. This is done to prepare for the spirits to come. They take food to the cemetery as well, to attract the spirits.
Also, some people set up alters in their homes. These are called ofrendas. They are to honor the people in their family who died. Ofrendas usually have pictures of the people who died. They also have decoration like marigold flowers, sugar skulls, and even Pan de Muerto. (bread of the dead)
The last way people can celebrate Dia de los Muertos is by going to festivals and/or parades. Many people wear skeleton face makeup to represent and celebrate the dead. Also some people dress up Catrina. If you don't already know, Catrina is the famous Day of the dead/Dia de los Muertos icon.
