My Family Works Differently

In the summer of 2004 my parents decided to move our family from Curitiba, Brazil to the USA. Three years later, I was born.

Music runs in my family, my father was a musician and so are my brothers. When I was 7, I told my parents I wanted to play piano and I think something clicked inside their brains. Ever since then, I've studied piano and music, adding new instruments to the list every few years. Guitar in 4th grade, drum set in 5th grade, and I joined the percussion section at school in 6th grade.

My family has always worked sort of differently, but I didn't really understand why until 4th grade. I think it was a random school day when I came home and my parents were clearly not in a good mood. I remember going to bed, and listening to the yelling coming from the kitchen. and then the garage door opening. I didn't see my dad for three months after that. My mom didn't say anything, and we didn't talk about it. But this became a normal sort of thing.
