Douglass was somewhat good friends with Lincoln. They had only spoken a few times, but in those conversations, it was a joyful talk.
Doug had attended Lincoln's second inauguration on the morning of March 4th, 1865 with over 30,000 spectators at the US Capitol.

A month later, the Civil war had ended. Five days later, Lincoln sat watching a play with his wife at Ford's Theater in Washington, he was shot in the head and died the next morning.
